Saturday 29 March - Donington
Qualified 9th out of 45 Locosts
With the grid only taking 32 cars, the bottom 32 raced in a heat to fill up the remaining 19 places in the final - the top 13 qualifiers automatically made it through to the final.
Starting 9th in the final I got a poor start due to too much wheel spin, and dropped to about 15th place. However I managed to pull back the places, and finished the final in 9th place - not bad for a first race.
Sunday 30 March - Donington
The grid positions for Sunday were worked out on the fastest individual lap from Saturday’s races. Despite finishing 9th on Saturday, I had been caught in a gaggle of cars, and my lap time was not that quick. My starting position on Sunday was therefore 21st, putting me in the heat.
I started the heat in 8th place on the grid, and quickly moved up to 2nd place. Despite repeated attempts, I was unable to take the lead, and finished in 2nd place. The race commentators were particularly impressed with the close racing which was without contact.
This put me in 15th place on the grid for the final. Again I did well, quickly moving up to 5th position. I battled with the 4th place car, and we moved well ahead of the 6th place car. Unfortunately on the very last lap, I hit some oil under braking for Redgate Corner, and gently nudged the 4th place car (sorry Eric!). He was unaffected, did not even have a dent, and went on to finish 4th. I was less lucky, badly damaging my nose-cone, and holing the radiator. With coolant leaking everywhere, I pulled off to the side to save the engine, and stopped in what should have been a comfortable and well earned 5th place.
