Saturday 26 Apr - Snetterton

With the weather forecasters predicting rain all weekend, and with me never having been to Snetterton before, the weekend promised to be "interesting" at the very least. As it turned out the heavy rain was on Friday night leaving a part dry/part damp track for qualifying, and a dry track for the race.

The Locost qualifying session was third on in the morning, and although the racing line was mostly dry, some was still wet, and off the racing line was definitely damp. I was one of the first out in qualifying and hence was one of only a few to complete 10 laps. Despite the long lap length (over 1.9 miles), we quickly caught the tail-enders, and mixed in with a few yellow flags, it was difficult to get a clean flying lap. I was therefore not surprised to find myself in a gaggle of cars qualifying in the 1 min 33 secs, with familiar faces around me in my 15th place.

The Locost race was at 2pm, and the sun was firmly out, making track conditions excellent. Or at least they would have been if it was not for a Formula Vee in the race before us depositing oil the length of the start finish straight. We had a lengthy wait in the assembly area whilst the marshalls put out cement to soak up the oil, and then the tractor came along and brushed the worst of it off - or so we thought. Eventually lining up on the grid, the oil spill was down the right hand side of the track, and I was conveniently just to the left of it. The green lights came on, and I immediately got past the chap in front who had been positioned on the oil spill. About 100m later on, the lead cars had churned up all the cement dust and it was impossible to see for a split second. Realising the track was clear to my left I headed across to clearer views. The first corner was its usual tangle, with a spinner in front of me, luckily he went off on the inside of the track. At the Esses on the first lap, another spinner immediately in front me left me nowhere to go but into the back of his car - we were both fine and continued, albeit we both lost a couple of places.

The next few laps whizzed by, and I was caught up behind Nik Tarry 88 and Colin Beckwith 39. Seizing my moment with a good exit on to the start/finish straight, I got inside Nik on the run to Riches corner and held my line. Another good exit on to the back straight saw me overtake Colin on the way in to the Esses. I then had a lonely race for 5 laps until the last lap when my brakes were fading fast, and Brett Townsend 41 overtook me to relegate me to 10th place. A good result I felt for a first race at Snetterton.
