Saturday 10 July - Pembrey
Qualifying was interesting. We managed 4 dry laps before the rain started. Luckily I got 2 good laps in, the better being 1 min 12.98 secs. The track did not get too slippery, but with 2 races this weekend, it was important to keep the car in one place, and I guess I slowed down more than necessary. As it turned out, the practice at driving the track in the rain was useful, as it then proceeded to rain most of the morning. The most memorable event was Nick Lear (70) overtaking me into the hairpin. I'd seen him coming, and as he was a good mate, let him through in such a way as to slow both of us down the least. However I didn't expect him to suddenly lose all power as we accelerated out of the hairpin - I missed him, but only just! More petrol in the tank next time please Nick!!!!!!!!
With the heaviest downpour just before our race, the track was truly soaked for our race. However it was not raining, and the track conditions improved steadily throughout the 12 lap race. I started in 9th position on the grid. We had a green flag lap so that we could work out where all the puddles were, and experience the shocking conditions. Nick Lear (70) was in front of me in 7th position. The green flags were waved and I practiced my start, only to find Nick stationary in front of me, broken down. I missed him, but again only just! (his dizzy cap had come off). As a result, I had a clear track in front of me for the start. I think it was about lap 5 before I could clearly see anything through the spray! The conditions were truly shocking, typified by my best lap time of 1 min 21.25 secs - over 8 secs slower than qualifying. I spent most of the race following Martin Gambling (77) whose car was handling like a pig. He was getting oversteer everywhere - I suppose I should have overtaken him somewhere, but there never seemed to be an opportunity. Also featuring was Danny Cassar (24) - he spun twice and went straight on at the hairpin, and yet still beat me! I don't know where he found the grip from. Despite all that, I had finished strongly in a wet race - something I'd not managed before. I guess something must be going better this year!
Alex Jullien (5) managed to win convincingly (after spending all day Friday testing), and got fastest lap with 1 min 19.54 secs. Well done Al...
